Our Story Capanna, an illustrious winery in Italy, has been under the stewardship of the Cencioni family since 1957. Located in the Montosoli area north of Montalcino, Capanna was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni, and with help of his sons Benito and Franco, became one of the first farms established in the modern period of Brunello. They started bottling their own wines in the 1960's and after Brunello di Montalcino was granted DOC status in 1966, Giuseppe became one of the 25 founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. In 1975, Capanna began exporting its renowned Brunello di Montalcino DOC, starting with the Capanna 1970 vintage. The 66 hectare Capanna estate (27 ha under vine) remains a family-run operation, with both farming and winemaking processes managed by the Cencioni family. They also collaborate with esteemed oenologist Paolo Vagaggini to ensure the highest quality in their wines. The dedication and expertise of the Cencioni family have solidified Capanna's reputation as a producer of some of the finest Brunello di Montalcino wines available.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw yellow with a nearly transparent hue. Aromatically intense, showing notes of apple, pear, tropical fruit, and white flowers. On the palate, it's vibrant and savory, with bright acidity, slight tannins from varietal character and oak aging, medium body, and good balance and persistence. Perfect with grilled seafood, white meats, light salads, pasta with pesto, soft cheeses, and roasted vegetables. The Capanna Farm, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, is situated in the Montosoli area, on the northern hillside of Montalcino. It was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni, one of the 25 founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. In 1975 Capanna began exporting Brunello di Montalcino DOC and has since won acclaim for its elegant wines, matured in traditional Slavonian oak casks. Amadeo Cencioni represents the 4th generation of family winemakers and continues the noble tradition of producing classic, structured wines from Montalcino. From Montalcino in Tuscany, this 100% Sangiovese is sourced from younger vines (5-10 years old) planted at 250-280m altitude with a northwest orientation. Trained using double spurred cordon on Galestro soils (clay schist and limestone), the vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate. The 2024 growing season began with a warm, dry winter, followed by rainfall in May and June. A hot, dry August delayed ripening, but intermittent rains helped rebalance the vines.
