In 1740, the Francois family arrived in Tuscany from France to serve the House of the Emperor. At the end nineteenth century Carlo Francois purchased the Castello di Querceto estate and began vine cultivation and wine making. In 1924, the Francois family played an integral role in founding Consorzio del Chianti Classico. Today, the fifth generation continues this long tradition of wine making. Atop a hill in the Comune di Greve in Chianti sits the Querceto estate, named after the nearby oak forest. The vineyards are renown for the key role they play in Tuscany's "new wave", introducing the use of international varietals in what would come to be known as "Super Tuscans".
