Castiglion del Bosco occupies a wooded hilltop northwest of Montalcino, within the Val d'Orcia's UNESCO World Heritage countryside; its medieval borgo dates to 1100 AD, and the estate has preserved the same boundaries for more than eight centuries. One of the founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino in 1967, the roughly 2,000-hectare property is today among the denomination's largest, though its 64 hectares of vines are still farmed with the care of a small artisanal estate, across soils and microclimates that change enough from parcel to parcel to give each site its own character. Vineyard management has been certified organic since 2016. This year Giuseppe Gorelli joined as winemaker: born and raised in Montalcino, he trained from age eighteen alongside Giulio Gambelli, one of the defining interpreters of Sangiovese, and spent the following two decades working with leading estates across the denomination.

Tasting Notes

A captivating bouquet shows mineral notes of graphite blending seamlessly with delicate hints of violets and aromatic cedar. On the palate, a fine balance between complexity and freshness is supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine youthful and lively, with polished tannins providing structure without overwhelming the elegant fruit and floral nuances. The finish is remarkably long, highlighting both immediate appeal and outstanding aging potential. Pairs well with lamb or pigeon with caramelized onions and beet root, foie gras, or Parma ham with figs; mushroom soup, eggs with white truffle, or wine-braised shallots are also excellent matches, as is aged Pecorino or Parmigiano with fig jam.
