Livio Felluga returned from the Second World War and sealed a lasting bond with the hillsides of Friuli by reviving the historic vineyards of Rosazzo, work that would earn him recognition as the patriarch of the wines of Friuli. His family's roots in wine run deeper still: five generations back to Istria, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, where his great-grandfather farmed and his grandfather grew Refosco and Malvasia alongside a small family trattoria. In 1920 his father Giovanni was sent to manage the family's wine trade in the seaside town of Grado, and it was there, as the eldest of a large family, that Livio grew up among the wines and the bottles. Livio moved to Friuli in the late 1930s, settling on the gentle foothills of Rosazzo, convinced that a rebirth of quality farming could bring the countryside back to life. In the 1950s he established the cellar at Brazzano and purchased the estate's first vineyards at Rosazzo. In 1956, anticipating the future implementation of appellation of origin, he chose an ancient map of the area for an iconic label that would tell the story of his wines. Today the family-owned winery is led by Livio's son, Andrea Felluga. Its hillside vineyards span the Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli, their Ponca soils - a mineral-rich blend of sandy clay and marl - shaping wines recognized among the most esteemed in the world.

Tasting Notes

Gold-golden yellow in the glass. The nose is deep and layered, with dried apricot, candied orange peel and clear notes of dried fig; swirled, it reveals chestnut honey and caramelized hazelnut, with powdered sweet spices in the background. On the palate it's mouth-filling and surprisingly lingering - the typical sweetness of dates and dried grapes is energized by moderate acidity, with echoes of citrus marmalade and Bourbon vanilla, while a nuance of black tea and sun-dried fruit carries through a luxurious, noble finish of impressive complexity.
