Pio Cesare was founded in 1881 in Alba, a Piedmont trading town on the Tanaro River, when entrepreneur Cesare Pio set out to produce a small, carefully chosen range of wines from the nearby hills of Barolo and Barbaresco for his own family, friends, and customers. He traveled across Europe in the early twentieth century to promote the wines himself, a habit of hands-on stewardship that has carried through five generations. His son Giuseppe, the second generation, inherited a thriving winery at the turn of the century and expanded its cellars and trade. In 1940, Giuseppe's daughter Rosy married Giuseppe Boffa, a Milan-based engineer who left his career to run the estate through the upheaval of the Second World War, building Pio Cesare into one of Italy's most respected producers. Rosy and Giuseppe named their youngest son Pio, in honor of his great-grandfather, and Pio Boffa went on to lead the company for more than forty years until his passing in 2021. Today the winery is run by his daughter, Federica Rosy Boffa, together with her cousin Cesare Benvenuto, who has worked alongside the family since 2000. Like Cesare Pio before them, Federica and Cesare travel to more than fifty countries to represent the family's wines. Their winemaking philosophy has not changed since 1881: grapes selected down to the single berry, shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, and barrel or cask aging chosen to suit each individual wine rather than passing trends.
